Libraries
Libraries
The UCD Library service is one of the most comprehensive in Ireland. There are five sites available for studying, borrowing books and all of the other fun things you'd expect. Aside from the James Joyce Library (the largest UCD library) there are a number of branch libraries which hold books for certain programmes, but all students can study in any of them. The physical sites are only half the story. UCD is the leading Irish library for the delivery of online services. A huge array of services are available online including thousands of online books and journals, an instant messaging service that gets you talking to library staff immediately and a host of blogs and RSS feeds designed to make it easier than ever for you to keep up-to-date. UCD Library is always introducing new and innovative online services and has recently entered Second Life and joined Facebook. Check out the Library webpage for more about all of this www.ucd.ie/library

The James Joyce Library
The James Joyce Library, the largest library in UCD, is located in the epicentre of the Belfield Campus. It caters for most of the subject areas studied in UCD. It houses books, journals (both paper and electronic), newspapers from around the world, maps, databases, microforms and a variety of other information sources. For many programmes, the James Joyce Library will be your first port of call for digging up information for a project or essay, or just for study.
Q & A'S
How do I locate material in the Library?
Finding where books, journals, maps etc are located in the Library is easy. Look on the Library's computers or online via UCD Connect. The catalogue is a good starting point. Most material can be borrowed, but some is for library use only. Remember if you need help you can always ask the friendly library staff.
How do I borrow a book?
Just like you needed your student card to get into the library, you also need it to take out books etc. Your student card also doubles as your library card. Different library users are entitled to have different amounts of books out on loan at any one time. In general, undergraduates can have on loan up to eight books from the general collection and two from the short loan section as well as some other allowances. Books and other materials that you intend to take out on loan can be checked out at the express service machines located in the libraries and at the service desks. You can also renew certain loans on-line through your UCD Connect account. For more information on this you can refer to the UCD Connect section.
Library Tours
What better way to get you used to using the library than taking an actual tour? James Joyce Library tours are available throughout the first few weeks of University, and there are different tours aimed at different courses. Find out what time tours for your course take place by popping by the Information Desk or the New Students Desk on the entrance floor, Level 1.
