S.U. Council

STUDENTS' UNION COUNCIL

Students' Union Council is the body responsible for setting Union policy, mandating Union Officers, and holding them to account.

Who sits on Council?

Council is made up of all the elected S.U. Class Reps, the Union executive & Sabbatical Officers.

What does it do?

Council sets Union policy by submitting motions, which are then debated and either passed or defeated. The Union and it's Officers are then bound by these policies. It also gives Reps a chance to hold Sabbatical & Executive Officers to account. Officers must present reports at each council and are subject to questioning from Reps. Motions can also be put in to mandate specific Officers to do certain things which are relevant to their roles.

Where and When?

Council takes place at least once per calendar month. The next meetings of Council are:

  • January 31
  • February 21
  • March 14
  • April 11
  • April 25

The location of Council can be in a different venue each week, subject to availability. Check the SU Facebook for more information. Council always takes place at 6.15pm and lasts around 1.5 hours.

Can I Come?

Of Course! Council is open to all members of the Union, i.e. all registered students in UCD. However, only elected Reps can speak or vote at Council.

How Does Council Work?

The business of Council is run by the Council Chair, Roland Rowan. The orders of business are governed by Standing Orders, which can be found here

Should I Come?

Absolutely! Important decisions are made at S.U. Council that directly affect you in more ways than you might think. It's important to know how your SU works and to know the work that it is doing. If you can't come, you should ask your class rep what issues are being discusssed at Council and make your feelings on them known.
