5,000 UCD STUDENTS SET FOR NOV 3rd PROTEST
UCD Students led by their Students' Union are joining thousands of students from all over Ireland next Wednesday, November 3rd for a protest march in Dublin city centre.
The protest will begin at 12:30pm on November 3rd in Parnell Square before proceeding to Government buildings.
The march will highlight the three main concerns of students.
1. The need to protect third level funding in the December budget
2. Further increases to the registration fee
3. Chronic levels of graduate unemployment
UCD SU President Paul Lynam said "Students across the country are sick and tired of the reckless actions of this Government."
"We have tried talking but they are ignorant to the plight of students. They are doing untold damage to future generations."
"They are engaged in high stakes gambling with the prospects of every student in Ireland, but the only losers will be every young person who hopes to go to college."
"Our students have seen the registration fee spiral from €190 to €1500. This large sum is fees in every way except by name. This charge is already forcing many students to struggle to afford college and further increases will be disastrous for people already under pressure financially."
"Third level grants have already suffered cuts of 5% last year's budget and early indications suggest that drastic cuts in excess of 5% and possibly as high as 10% could be made in December's budget."
"One in five people on the dole in Ireland in 2010 have a degree. We are calling on the Government to take immediate action including implementing the graduate internship programme as a matter of urgency."
"We hope to get in excess of 5,000 UCD students on the streets of Dublin to show this Government that students are sick and tired of the third level sector being decimated by endless cuts."
