STATEMENT BY UCD STUDENTS' UNION RE:KYLEMORE
UCD SU CRITICAL OF UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY
- KYLEMORE DECISION CREATES MONOPOLY
UCD Students’ Union has called for immediate clarification from UCD on the decision to award exclusive catering rights to the Kylemore group for all food outlets on campus.
UCD SU President Pat de Brún said “This decision was made without consultation with students or the SU.”
“This decision gives Kylemore a total monopoly over food prices and quality on the UCD campus and we are calling for clarification on the tendering process and the details of the new deal.”
Existing outlets will close from August 12th and includes Insomnia, Cafe Fresca, 911 Cafe, and the Arts Cafe.
De Brún added “The lack of communication and transparency on this issue has shown extremely poor judgement on behalf of the university authorities.
“Students are a key stakeholder and can’t be kept in the dark over such a large commercial decision.”
“The secrecy surrounding this deal raises questions that must be answered immediately. Was the contract put out to public tender to ensure the students are receiving the best deal? Has the Kylemore group promised to offer student friendly prices?”
“The Students’ Union wish that clarify that the SU outlets with not be affected by this decision and will continue to offer students a great low cost choice.”
SU Campaigns and Communications officer Brendan Lacey said “The SU wants to ensure students are offered a wide range of choices at affordable prices, including a range of healthy options.”
“Students have all contacted the SU to express their disappointment with the way in which this manner has been dealt with.”
