The ongoing issue of

Student Housing & UCD Res

Housing and transport are huge social issues for Irish students.

Over the last 5 years, areas traditionally rented by the people going to this college - Ranelagh, Rathgar, Rathmines, Clonskeagh, Booterstown & Stillorgan - have seen the sharpest rises in the private rental market.

Demand is so high for a place in these areas that prices increased by almost 30% during the term of our last government. Most students can no longer get a viewing, let alone a lease.

SU President calls for Minister for Housing in new Government as Dublin apartment rents are higher today than at peak of property boom in 2007.

Meanwhile rates for UCD Res have climbed to private sector levels as university management continues to follow a funding model for expansion which relies heavily on income from price hikes - leaving students to shoulder the financial burden.

Last semester, we acted to change this situation with an intervention from Labour party representatives. Following several meetings over the first semester with Minister Alan Kelly and Tanáiste Joan Burton, it was agreed that UCD Res development should be funded by a government-backed investment fund - the Irish Strategic Investment Fund.

Last October, former Tánaiste Joan Burton wrote (pictured) to UCD President Andrew Deeks to support our calls for a more sustainable development model for UCD Res.

We’re currently negotiating a new funding model with university management and the Irish Strategic Investment Fund. We expect the ISIF to invest €25 million in the expansion of campus accommodation and we’re pressing university management have to lower price increases forecast for next year by half - from 14% to 7%.

The Higher Education Authority recommended exactly the same type of intervention across Ireland in a recent report on student accommodation. For this kind of social reform to happen on a larger scale, we need more pressure on uni management & more political backing.

We have worked with before to highlight the lack of affordable bed spaces for young people attending college in Dublin and now we’re working with them to 1) encourage landlords to rent private accommodation to student tenants and 2) encourage homeowners to let their spare rooms out to students as “digs”. partnered with us to promote better image of student tenants

At a time when students find it hard to get a viewing, have tried to help us promote our demographic as good tenants by pointing to our sense of community as evident from student support of political reform, huge student fundraisers for overlooked causes and our collective response to tragedy last June.

Meanwhile, as high building costs and low building activity have resigned most Irish politicians and journalists to the opinion that there is no short term solution to the current housing crisis, are trying to help us promote tax breaks available under Ireland’s national rent-a-room scheme so homeowners with a spare room offer more “digs” to students.

On our end of the partnership, we’re currently working to unlock funding promised us by Minister Alan Kelly to help finance this joint initiative.
