UCD Students’ Union is proud to be supporting the March for Marriage on Sunday 18th August. A survey carried out in UCD last year found that over 93% of students are in favour of marriage equality.
This March is an annual campaign organised by LGBT Noise calling for equal marriage for all of Irish citizens, regardless of sexuality. The Constitutional Convention marked a historic moment towards equality for LGBT people in Ireland - 79% of those at the Convention voted in favor of marriage equality.
UCD Students’ Union is meeting with the Student block in Trinity College Dublin at 2.00pm this Sunday.
Mícheál Gallagher, UCD Students’ Union President said:
“We as students need to stand by our LGBT peers and ensure that no one feels discriminated against in Ireland due to sexuality. Working as the Welfare Officer last year I often found students haunted by bullying and prejudice because of their sexuality and this is what we need to stop. By legalising gay marriage Ireland will be taking a huge step towards having our LGBT citizens treated as true equals.”
Cian Dowling, UCD Students’ Union Welfare & Equality Officer said:
“As students we have a moral responsibility to demand a better future. We need to keep pressure on the Government to set a date for a referendum without delay.”
