UCD Students’ Union Green Week

25th January 2019

By Katie O’Dea

UCDSU Environmental Campaign Coordinator

UCD’s inaugural Green Week, part of the UCD Green Campus Initiative, takes place 4-8 February. Not only that but we’ve somehow managed to make it a collaborative effort with tons of different groups and societies getting involved. If you’re not one of them, why not? Get in touch with your ideas on our social media accounts.

We’re teaming up with UCD’s largest society, the L&H for a spicy panel discussion on environmental responsibility. Does it really matter if that half-full coffee cup goes in the recycling? Who really cares if I drive to college? And are KeepCups anything more than a fashionable accessory? These are the hard-hitting questions we’ll be putting to our star-studded line-up of panellists including leader of the Green Party leader, Eamon Ryan; Fine Gael general election candidate, Deirdre Duffy; UCD’s own Dr. Lisa Ryan of the School of Economics with more special guests to be announced. The L&H will be opening their exclusive doors for one night only to all students regardless of whether you’re a member – but they would love for you to sign up.

On Thursday, in rooms 5/6/7 (beside the Fitzgerald Chamber!) we’re holding a clothes swap. Bring your own stuff and you’ll get a little green token for each item. Otherwise, you can buy tokens with the proceeds going to the RAG Week charities. You can then exchange these tokens for other items. The guys from The Sustainable Store in Blackrock will also be there talking about how to live sustainably and showing off their products. There will be some free goodies, so bop along and say hello.

Estate Services have organised a series of awesome lunchtime walks, starting at the Chess Garden. You can expect to visit the Orchard, Apiary, Rosemount Gardens and more! One of your guides, Brian Tobin, was part of establishing an apiary on campus in 2014 and today runs a module on bees! He is an assistant professor in forestry. Another, Mary Forrest has been involved in European-funded projects such as the Teaching of Sustainable Development in Life Science in Europe (2010-13). Bike Day 2019 is happening on Thursday 7th February. From 10am, cyclists can avail of FREE refreshments and learn about safe cycling practices. Every year, UCD Bike Day promotes all aspects of cycling; safe cycling practices, the health, economic and environmental benefits of cycling, and bicycle security. There may even be some free gifts and prizes in it for you!

Do you like food? Do you dislike food waste? Then we have some super events for you.

Fitzgerald Chamber will host a panel discussion on food waste on Thursday followed by some scrumptious actual food. Speakers include Food Cloud founder Aoibheann O’Brien and Mindy O’Brien of VOICE. On Wednesday, tv chef, Adrian Martin will host a zero waste cooking demo in the Atrium from 1-3pm. Zaneta from Rerooting the Future will join us on Thursday from 4-6pm to talk about alternative uses of food waste and do mini workshops on cleaning and beauty products. Did we mention food?

Our friends over at HortSoc and BioSoc are holding a workshop to fill out insect hotels with compostable materials which will provide insects with a place to hibernate and encourage insect pollination. Did you know that coffee ground waste is fantastic as a fertiliser and helps break down other compost waste? BioSoc will also be holding a Green Week special of their fortnightly Dodder Clean Up, meeting outside the Clubhouse at 5pm on Monday.

Oh, and one more thing… keep an eye out for recycling in Newman 😉
