UCD STUDENTS’ UNION SUPPORTS THE COMMUNITY OF RÁTH CHAIRN TO PROTECT GAELTEACHT AREA

Tadhg Maloney, Irish Language Officer, UCD Students’ Union said;

‘UCD Students' Union would like to extend its support to the community of Ráth Chairn in their efforts to stop a property development in the area that would devastate both the community and the Irish language. Despite objections from An Bord Pleanála's own inspector, Meath CoCo and the entire community, permission has been granted to build 27 houses and a 3-story hotel in the heart of the village. To put this in perspective, only 40 houses have been built in the area in the last 40 years. A development of this size in an area with less than 500 people and no public transport makes no sense and it would decimate all efforts to preserve the Irish language in the area.

Please sign the change.org petition below and write to Damien English (FG) and Johnny Guirke (SF), TDs for Meath West and stand with the people of Ráth Chairn.

Ba mhaith le hAontas na Mac Léinn COBÁC a dtacaíocht a thabhairt do mhuintir Ráth Chairn agus iad ag dul i gcoinne forbraíocht réadmhaoine san áit, a scriosfadh an pobal agus teanga na Gaeilge. Cé go raibh agóidí ina choinne ó Chigire an Bhoird Pleanála, Comhairle Chontae na Mí agus chuile dhuine i Ráth Chairn, tugadh cead do 27 teach nua agus óstán 3 urlár i lár an tsráidbhaile. Le seo a fheiceáil i gceart, ní raibh ach 40 teach tógtha san áit le 40 bliain. Ní dhéanann forbraíocht chomh mór seo in áit le níos lú ná 500 duine agus gan aon iompar poiblí aon chiall, agus mhillfeadh sé na hiarrachtaí móra atá déanta chun teanga na Gaeilge a chaomhnú agus a fhorbairt san áit. Sínigí an achainí thíos agus scríobhaigí chun na TDs luaite thuas le seasamh le muintir Ráth Chairn i gcoinne an forbraíocht sheafóideach seo. Go raibh maith agaibh.’
