SU launches two student nights in partnership with Tramline and Copper Face Jacks
Series of events includes daytime and night time socials for UCD students
Moroney says ‘Big Welcome Back’ intended to show returning students that they haven’t been forgotten about
(Friday 9 September 2022) - With students returning for the first full year back on campus post-pandemic, UCD Students’ Union (UCDSU) this morning revealed the details of both its ‘Big Welcome Back’ and Freshers’ events due to take place over the course of September.
The Students’ Union published details of these events on its website and across social media this morning, with the centrepiece being a ticketed night during Oktoberfest on Wednesday 28 September.
Returning students are invited to the ‘Big Welcome Back’ event on the Belfield campus on Tuesday 13 September. To mark returning students’ first full return to campus in 3 years, the grass area by Sutherland will be decked out with inflatable activities, with music and Domino’s pizza on the hour. The event will run from 11am-3pm (weather permitting).
Later that evening will be the first instalment of the new ‘Tower Tuesdays’ night especially for UCD students, which is being run in partnership with Tramline nightclub on D’Olier St.
The next night, UCD students can avail of the SU’s new partnership with Copper Face Jacks on Harcourt St. Tickets for both nights can be accessed on the UCDSU website at: https://www.ucdsu.ie/events and will be available every week.
Thursday sees UCDSU partnering with the UCD Cinema and Student Centre for an Irish Film Festival Day. From 2pm, a selection of Irish films will be screened in the newly refurbished UCD Cinema. A panel discussion featuring Rob Strong, and Irish artists and creatives involved in The Commitments will be held at 7pm, with a reception in the UCD Clubhouse bar at 9.30pm.
The last week of the month (w/c 26 September) will see the SU work in tandem with the German Society, the UCD Clubhouse Bar, and the Student Centre to roll out UCD Oktoberfest in the Astra Hall. Tuesday sees “Disktoberfest”, a night filled with classic dance music in the setting of Bavarian decorations.
The Oomparty Band play a ticketed night on the Wednesday, with entry costing €20 pp with tickets including one drink. To round up the week, Astra Hall hosts a drag show on Thursday hosted by Regina George. Entry for each night is first-come, first-served, with tickets available at: https://www.ucdsu.ie/events.
In collaboration with Healthy UCD, First Aid Awareness Courses are on offer to students on Thursday 29th, to mark World Heart Day. Three hour-long sessions will be available for students to learn life-saving skills ahead of the academic year. The event is free, and students can access tickets and more information at https://www.ucdsu.ie/events.
Speaking ahead of the start of term, UCDSU Entertainments Officer Ciara Moroney said:
“It’s an exciting time for students! This new academic year offers a chance for students to enjoy their college experience to the fullest, and I’d like to make it known from the get-go that the SU is here for students to help cultivate their student life. I’m very aware of the strain students are under, and I want to offer a chance to let off some steam. I’ll be holding fun events to try to bring the community spirit back to UCD- something that all students are deserving of. The Big Welcome Back event is here to offer returning students a chance to have a bit of a classic fun-day before the year really kicks off, and highlight their first proper week back since the pandemic. “
