Coiste Gaeilge Update

At Union council last semester a motion was put forward by Oifigeach na Gailege Aoibhinn Brenthall and Education Officer Sarah McGrath and was passed that established a Coiste Gaeilge (Irish committee). This committee will provide direction on the use of Irish language and culture within the Union and will be chaired by the Oifigeach na gaeilge (Irish language officer). Anyone can join, from those with cúpla focal to our Gaeilgeoirí líofa, Irish is for everyone. You can email oifigeachnagaeilge@ucdsu.ie to get involved.

The first meeting was held on February 8. The Coiste’s first act was to appoint members to various roles. The members include students from a wide variety of courses and stages.

Their first point of action will be working on an Irish policy for the Students’ Union. The aim of this policy will be to bring more consistency and quality to UCDSU’s engagement with the Irish language, bridge current gaps where the SU cannot issue communications as Gaeilge (unless there is a Sabbatical Officer who is fluent), and compel the Union to both working with the University as well as holding it to account in respect of its Irish language obligations.
