Background

A Constitutional Referendum has been called by UCD Students’ Union Council, in accordance with the Union Constitution.

The UCD Students’ Union Constitution is the binding document passed by referendum that sets out the Union’s core values, functions, and objectives. It serves as the rule book for the organisation and governs how it operates.

Union Council established a Constitutional Review Committee to develop proposed changes. The committee:

  • Received input from students, the UCDSU Board of Directors, and the Union solicitor.

  • Was chaired by an independent Chairperson and supported by SU staff.

  • Developed recommendations based on consultation and review of current governance structures.

The proposed Constitution has been approved by Union Council for submission to the membership.

Validity Criteria

For the referendum result to be valid:

  1. At least 12.5% of registered students must cast a vote.

  2. A simple majority (>50%) of votes cast must be in favour for the referendum to pass.

Outcome

  • If passed: The new Constitution will become the governing document of UCD Students’ Union.

  • If not passed: The existing Constitution will remain in effect.
