Recap: UCDSU Sustainable Fashion Show

On 18th April, UCD Students' Union held its inaugural UCDSU Sustainable Fashion Show along with a Vintage Clothing Fair. This event was generously sponsored by Capital Credit Union.

James Liston, Business Development Manager of Capital Credit Union, was delighted to be in attendance and said:

"Capital Credit Union are delighted to be supporting UCDSU's Sustainable Fashion Showcase.

As part of our sustainability strategy, we have introduced a range of climate initiatives such as solar panels, an electric company car, LED lighting and digital screens to name a few.

However, as a Credit Union, we also want to empower our local community, especially students which is why we sponsored the UCDSU Sustainable Fashion Showcase. It was amazing to see the work the students put in that created some incredible designs that can contribute to a more circulate economy.

We look forward to working with UCDSU on initiatives like this in the future."

The event comprised of two elements:

Vintage Clothing Fair, 11am - 3pm

Sustainable Fashion Show, 1pm - 2pm

Many thanks to whack.vintage, 35mm_vintage & ragsofficialvintage for being the vintage companies that attended the fair and offered a varied range of vintage clothing to students before, during and after the Sustainable Fashion Show. #vintageclothing

The Sustainable Fashion Show kicked off at 12 noon, and the scene was set with a decent crowd of enthusiasts to supporting the showcase of sustainable fashion and to cheer on the 7 stylists engaged in the competition. With Aisling Bonner (aisling_bon) of officialspin1038 MC'ing the event and a judging panel ready to pick the prize winner, the stage was set (excuse the pun) for a catwalk bonanza of the freshest and innovative student creativity.

Stylists

  • Sineaid Whelan

  • Amy Finnegan

  • Julian Hauxwell

  • Emilia Zajac

  • Mollie Breen

  • Abby Cahill

  • Riley Colson

Judges

  • Ciara Coughlan, Climate Ambassador

  • Erin Hoare, UCDSU Environmental Campaign Coordinator

  • Molly Greenough, UCDSU President

  • Aria Nasty, Drag Queen

The show began with an introduction of the running order and theme of the event. The first round had the stylists preparing an outfit for the theme of "In Belfield" with their chosen model donning the outfit on the catwalk. At the end of the first round all models showcased their outfits together while the judges questioned the stylists and shared their thoughts on the outfits. Stylists also took questions from the crowd; this was followed by a demonstration of the second theme - "UCD Ball: A Gig to Remember".

All stylists were vying for a €500 cash prize from Capital Credit Union, and after much deliberation the judges communicated their winner to MC, Aisling Bonner. Overall, there were some superb designs and catwalks, but the eventual winner was: Julian Hauxwell and his model and brother Max Hauxwell.

UCDSU Entertainments Officer, Ciara Moroney, was delighted with how the event went, saying:

"The inaugural UCDSU Sustainable Fashion Show was a great success. The high level of creativity from our UCD Student Stylists demonstrated how exploring sustainable sources like second hand shops is versatile, affordable, and can suit many different styles. Fast fashion presents itself as an easy way to keep up with trends, however shopping sustainably is a far better choice for both the environment and society, and supports a more ethical fashion industry. This is a choice that more and more UCD students are on board with."
