Students express solidarity following O’Brien verdict

(Dublin - Tuesday 25 June 2024) UCD Students’ Union (UCDSU) is deeply saddened and outraged by the recent verdict in the case involving Natasha O'Brien and Cathal Crotty. Natasha was brutally attacked without provocation, suffering severe physical and emotional trauma.

Despite the gravity of his actions, Cathal Crotty received a fully suspended sentence. Rulings like this have become all too common in Ireland and they lay bare a disturbing leniency in handling such violent crimes.

UCDSU President Miranda Bauer said:

“As a Students’ Union committed to gender equality and justice, we cannot remain silent on this matter. This case underscores systemic failures in addressing and punishing  gender-based crimes appropriately. “

UCDSU Campaigns & Engagement Officer Saskia McCormack-Eiffe added:

“The miscarriage of justice against women in this country is one we have seen time and time again, and we must pressure our decision makers into doing more to end gender based violence. We stand in solidarity with Ms. O’Brien, who bravely waived her anonymity in the search of justice, which she was denied. We also remember the victims of gender based violence and keep all those impacted in our thoughts.”

UCDSU stands in solidarity with Natasha O'Brien and all survivors of gender-based violence. We call for a thorough review of sentencing guidelines in such cases to ensure that justice is served, and the safety and dignity of all individuals are upheld.

It is imperative that we, as a community, demand accountability and strive for a society where violence against women is met with the seriousness it deserves. We will continue to advocate for policies and practices that protect and support survivors of violence.
