UCD Students Vote to Pass New Students’ Union Constitution

Results have been announced for the referendum on the proposed UCDSU constitution, alongside the executive by-elections held for vacant College Officer roles.

The constitutional referendum has passed, moving the role of Oifigeach na Gaeilge from a part-time position into a full-time sabbatical officer role, to take effect at the next electoral cycle (Q1 2027).

The total valid poll for the referendum was 4,911, whilst quorum was 4,029.

The total number of No votes cast in the referendum was 297, whilst the number of Yes votes was 4,614.

Therefore, the referendum passed with 94% of students voting in favour.

The voting period for the referendum and elections was held from 21st April until 24th April at 3pm, following a one-day extension.

With the referendum now passed, the constitutional changes will now move into an implementation phase.

This means the new structures agreed by students will be formally put in place and embedded into the day-to-day operation of the Students’ Union over the coming period.

Some changes will take effect immediately, while others will require a phased approach to ensure they are properly established, resourced, and integrated into existing Union systems.

This implementation work will involve updating internal processes, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and ensuring that the new constitutional arrangements function effectively in practice.

The focus over the coming months will be on ensuring that the changes delivered through this referendum strengthen the Union’s ability to represent students and carry out its work effectively across campus.
