UCDSU President's update

UCDSU President, Martha Ní Riada.

UCDSU President, Martha Ní Riada.

As we find ourselves at the midpoint of this academic year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what has been such a busy period and extend heartfelt well wishes from the UCDSU team and I, as we approach the exam and assessment period.

This year has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. It's been an incredible honour to serve you so far and as your SU President, it's particularly poignant for me as we're halfway through my term. I'm looking forward to what the next half brings, especially as the annual executive elections approach.

Yes, it's that time again! The upcoming elections will usher in a new wave of leaders, a fresh perspective, and a dynamic battle of ideas. I encourage all of you to consider stepping up or supporting those who do. The diversity of thought and passion that emerges during this process is not just the heart but the lifeblood of a vibrant students’ union.

Reflecting on the highlights of the year so far, one proud moment that stands out is our role in shaping the national conversation on student accommodation. We've engaged with politicians across party lines in the Dáil, advocating for solutions that address the real struggles students face. We know we have to keep pushing on this, especially with local and European elections on the horizon. Students will have to leave their mark on these.

Here in UCD, we’ve been building on the momentum from last year's team and I’m proud of our efforts in increasing the number of elected class representatives, as we try to ramp up engagement to pre-pandemic levels. These dedicated individuals are the backbone of our SU, ensuring your concerns and needs are heard, and giving us an insight into every programme.

Recognising that not everyone can make it to SU meetings, we've also taken the SU to you. We've revitalised our local College Council meetings, bringing the heart of our union directly to where you are. It's about accessibility, transparency, and ensuring that every student, no matter where they are, feels connected to the pulse of our university community. These will continue to take place in every UCD college over the coming months as we aim to weave the student voice into every aspect of university decision making.

As we brace ourselves for the upcoming exams and assessments, I want each of you to know that you're not alone. Reach out if you need support, take breaks when you can, and know that your SU is cheering you on every step of the way.

Looking ahead, I'm excited about the possibilities the next trimester holds. Wishing you success in your exams, a rejuvenating break, and looking forward to the vibrant energy that awaits us in 2024.

Best wishes,

Martha.
