UNION COUNCIL #1 UPDATE

Union Council convened on Monday 16 October for its first meeting of the 2023-2024 Academic Year. Council is the highest policy-making body of the SU, as well as being the space where elected class reps hold the Union Executive to account. It was the biggest attendance we have seen in the post-pandemic era, which bodes well for a good year. Read on to see what went on.

Business College Officer by-election: Simon

A notable highlight from the council meeting was the election of the new College Officer for Business, Simon Van Beek. His election was met with enthusiasm as the UCD community welcomed him as a valuable addition to the Executive team. Simon is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering engagement among UCD students pursuing business-related courses. Keep an eye out for forthcoming information about Simon's plans for the year ahead, as his initiatives promise to benefit all students in the Business College.

Item for approval: Referendum on PhD Supports

During the meeting, Council confirmed an essential decision: the upcoming referendum on PhD supports. The Union's PhD researcher cohort will have an opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns in this referendum, scheduled for October. If you are a PhD researcher, your participation is crucial. By taking part, you contribute to a collective effort to better understand your needs and how the Students' Union can advocate on your behalf.

Motions: Smurfit Survey Motion & Clinical Uniform Sale

The council meeting also saw the approval of two impactful initiatives. First, the Smurfit Community Survey, which has garnered success over the past few months, will continue in the upcoming year. This survey plays a vital role in shaping the direction of support for students studying at Smurfit. Secondly, the annual Clinical Uniform Sale, another successful initiative, is set to become a regular feature. This move allows UCD to continue connecting recent graduates with new students and, in turn, helps keep the cost of college down. These motions reflect a commitment to student welfare and financial well-being.

Questions not on notice: USI Referendum?

The next council meeting, slated for Monday, November 6, promises to be a significant one. Elected representatives are set to welcome speakers from the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), providing a broader perspective on student issues and opportunities for collaboration. Additionally, the meeting will include a comprehensive review of the Students' Union's finances, ensuring transparency and fiscal responsibility. Your active participation is encouraged as it enables the SU to make informed decisions that reflect the collective student voice.

In Conclusion: Your Voice Matters

Union Council is the place to have your voice heard on matters that affect your education, your college experience and your life in general. Council meetings are open to all UCD students, and you can leverage your Class Rep to bring forward discussion items, motions, and policies. By doing so, you actively steer the direction of the Students' Union, making a difference in the UCD community. Together, we can ensure that the university experience remains inclusive, supportive, and enriching for all.
