UCDSU Launches Constitutional Review Committee

UCD Students’ Union (UCDSU) has established a Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) to ensure that the Union’s constitutional framework continues to meet the evolving needs of UCD students.

A motion brought forward by UCDSU President Michael Roche to a recent meeting of Union Council noted that no substantive constitutional changes have been adopted since 2019, despite previous efforts, and affirmed the importance of keeping the Union’s governance structures modern, representative, and aligned with best practice.

The CRC will operate as a subcommittee of Union Council and is tasked with reviewing the Constitution and making recommendations to ensure it is fit for purpose, accessible, and reflective of UCD’s evolving academic, quality assurance, and governance structures.

Membership will include Sabbatical Officers, representatives of Union Council, two ordinary members of the Union (who must be registered UCD students), UCD faculty and management in a non-voting capacity, and an independent chairperson.

Expressions of interest for the two ordinary student member positions should be sent to president@ucdsu.ie and include a statement of no more than 500 words outlining what applicants would bring to the process.

The Committee is mandated to report regularly to Union Council, with its final report and recommendations due by February 2026. The committee will also be taking submissions and feedback from the membership and wider UCD community.

UCDSU President Michael Roche said:
"Our Constitution is the backbone of how the Union operates. This review is about maintaining constitutional hygiene, making participation easier for students, and evolving our governance to match the changing structures and expectations across UCD. It’s essential that the Union remains representative, robust, and ready to support students today and into the future."

The establishment of the CRC marks a significant step in ensuring that UCDSU’s governance remains transparent, effective, and aligned with its members’ needs.
